Create a music website
October 23, 2009
When I started making music I did not have a clue how to promote my music. I don't have a band and I don't play at pubs or clubs. I just enjoy making music. But I always wondered if people would like my music and actually buy it. I'm not a professional musician that can spend thousands of dollars on mastering and marketing my music. I have a day job and the only time I can really make music is after the kids are in bed. But I still managed to produce 3 albums. Not just create it, I composed, mixed and mastered everything myself. I even did the album covers and printing of the cd's myself. Yes, it's hard work, but I enjoy doing it. If I didn't, I wouldn't have done it. But through this whole process I always wondered if anyone would actually like it enough to buy it.
So I started searching. I started with google. Time and again a website called cdbaby came up. So I thought, lets give it a go. I printed 5 cd's and sent it to cdbaby. This was about 5 years ago when cdbaby was starting with the whole digital thing. I got a few hits here and there but realized that cdbaby has thousands of artists and millions of songs. My music will only be seen by a few. Then I saw that cdbaby also has a service where you can create a website and host it on their site. It's called hostbaby. I immediately signed up and created a website. This worked and I averaged about 5000 visits a month. Not bad at all. I also started selling more cd's and digital download mp3's. I have to date sold over $500.00 of music. Now, I know you are saying to yourself, thats not much. But remember one thing, I only submitted my music to cdbaby and created a website. Thats it. I did not use any form of marketing. I did not print any posters or play any gigs. No adwords or facebook adds. I still managed to sell $500.00 worth of music.
If you have a band, or your'e solo or whatever. If your music is good and you know it is, then there is absolutely no reason why you cannot be successfull. If I can give you a tip, get a website. Even if you don't know anything about webdesign, learn. It's easy. I created the hostbaby website without any experience. I took me about a week, and the site was up. You can even use a site called yola.com which I use for this website. Use it as a tool when you promote your band or music. Print tshirts with your website address on when you play gigs. Sell it to your fans. Get your name out there, and one of the best ways I know is a website. You can even sell your cd's directly from your site or let cdbaby handle that part for you. Whatever you do get a website.
I don't want to drag this post out but you get the point. There are a lot of other ways to promote your music and I'll post some other ideas in the months to come.
Thats it for now. Keep playing.
